Govt: Brits underestimate alcohol intake by up to 40%
New figures compiled by the government have revealed that some Britons may be underestimating their alcohol intake by up to 40 per cent.
Research carried out by the Department of Health has raised "major concerns" with regard to the nation's knowledge of alcohol as there is a widespread underestimation in terms of both the frequency at which they drink and volume of alcohol they consume.
This study was conducted to coincide with the launch of the latest Change4life TV advertisement campaign as the administration looks to raise awareness of the health issues that can be caused by regularly imbibing more than the recommended amount.
According to the survey, 80 per cent of those who consume too much alcohol only think of themselves as "moderate" drinkers, while 60% of this group have no intention of reducing their intake.
Professor Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer, commented: "Cutting back your drinking can reduce your health risks, reduce your calorie intake, help you sleep better and boost your energy."
