Biogen Idec reports positive haemophilia trial data

Biogen Idec has reported encouraging clinical trial data from a new study of its recombinant factors VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) and IX Fc fusion protein (rFIXFc) therapies for haemophilia patients.

The investigational treatments were shown in a series of phase III studies to deliver long-lasting protection from bleeding with fewer injections than are required with the current standard of care for haemophilia A and B.

Named A-Long and B-Long, the phase III registrational studies were the largest carried out among haemophilia patients to date and demonstrated the strong potential offered by this innovative new class of medicines.

Dr Glenn Pierce, senior vice-president of global medical affairs and chief medical officer of Biogen Idec's haemophilia therapeutic area, said: "Less frequent injections may help more people with haemophilia adhere to a preventative treatment schedule, which can help prevent the long-term health consequences associated with treating a bleed after it occurs."

Last week, the company announced that it is to assume full control of its key product Tysabri after agreeing a deal with partner Elan to buy out its stake in the multiple sclerosis therapy.
