Pfizer reports positive safety and immunogenicity data for Prevenar 13

Pfizer has reported new study data on its pneumococcal disease vaccine Prevenar 13 that offers further evidence of its potential benefits.

According to the results of the latest phase III trial, the therapy delivered a strong performance in terms of immunogenicity, tolerability and safety among HIV-infected adults who had previously received at least one dose of the conventional pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.

This is an important finding, as the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease is significantly higher among HIV sufferers, as well as the potential of recurrent disease.

Pfizer will use this data to support planned regulatory submissions to include data on HIV-infected immunocompromised adults in the Prevenar 13 label worldwide.

Dr William Gruber, senior vice-president for Pfizer's vaccine clinical research and development division, said: "Pfizer is committed to providing information about this important vaccine across all age groups, especially those with conditions that put them at higher risk of pneumococcal infections, such as those with HIV infection."

This comes after the vaccine received an expanded indication in Europe in January 2013, allowing it to be used among patients aged between six and 17 years of age.
