Mast launches new detection set to combat antibiotic resistance

12th March 2013

Mast has announced the launch of its new Carbapenemase Detection Set, the latest addition to its Antibiotic Resistance Detection Set portfolio.

The new technology provides reliable phenotypic identification of metallo beta-lactamases and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases, high levels of sensitivity and precise results.

It uses a combination disc technology incorporating specific enzyme inhibitors to positively detect resistant enzymes, manufacturing discs as matched pairs to prevent erroneous results from arising.

This is a potentially important product introduction, as the spread of carbapenem-hydrolysing beta-lactamase enzymes has coincided with a rise in antibiotic resistance, making the detection of carbapenemase producers essential.

Mast added: "This simple four-disc system is available in a convenient cartridge format, compatible with any Mast DiscMaster dispenser, streamlining workflow and assisting smooth integration into routine laboratory testing."

The launch coincides with recent comments from England's chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies calling for renewed action to stop the "catastrophic" spread of antibiotic resistance.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801555089-ADNFCR
