GlaxoSmithKline and McLaren announce science education project

GlaxoSmithKline and racing team McLaren have announced a new programme for their Scientists in Sport education initiative, with the aim of making science careers more appealing to youngsters.

This year's Scientists in Sport activities will encourage young people to examine the science behind Formula One racing through various activities, including the new Fast Forward Challenge competition.

Schools participating in this contest will need to devise a test to help improve the performance of F1 drivers, with winners getting to visit the McLaren Technology Centre and see their test carried out by a member of the team.

This comes after Scientists in Sport won a Podium Award in 2012 for inspiring learning about the science of anti-doping in sport among young people and their teachers.

Patrick Vallance, GlaxoSmithKline's president of research and development, said: "As a science-led organisation, we are passionate about supporting the next generation of scientists who can drive forward the UK's science base."

Last month, the company further underlined its commitment to better practice by announcing its support for the AllTrials campaign, which aims to improve clinical trial data transparency throughout the industry.
