Biogen Idec studies highlight further Tysabri benefits

19th March 2013

Biogen Idec has reported data from a number of studies that further enhance the positive clinical profile of the multiple sclerosis (MS) drug Tysabri.

An independent statistical analysis of the product showed that it is able to deliver a significantly lower rate of first relapse compared to interferon beta and glatiramer acetate, two alternative first-line therapies.

Meanwhile, data from a separate trial underlined the solidity of the drug's anti-JC virus antibody status over an 18-month period – a key factor in accurately assessing each patient's personal benefit-risk profile.

Results from an additional ongoing study also suggested that Tysabri can deliver better outcomes for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy patients when administered early.

Dr Alfred Sandrock, senior vice-president for development sciences and chief medical officer at Biogen Idec, said: "This new data reinforces our belief in the substantial efficacy Tysabri has demonstrated at both the early and advanced stages of relapsing forms of MS."

Tysabri is a key product for Biogen Idec and a proven blockbuster therapy, with sales revenues for the drug increasing by five percent year over year in 2012.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801558467-ADNFCR
