Hologic’s breast tomosynthesis technology shows benefits in new trial

Hologic has highlighted data from a new study in the medical journal European Radiology that demonstrates the benefits of its breast tomosynthesis technology in breast cancer screenings.

According to results from the analysis – which took place at Oslo University Hospital Ullevaal and included a total of 12,621 screening examinations – Hologic's technology has been shown to improve detection of cancers missed when using 2D imaging systems alone.

The technique used in the study was based on the principle of double reading, whereby two radiologists independently assess the same case, with an arbitration or consensus meeting being held if there is initially a disagreement.

Using this method, the team increased the detection of breast cancers by approximately 30 percent, while cutting down the number of false positives by 18 percent.

Peter Soltani, Hologic's senior vice-president and general manager of breast health, said: "It is very encouraging, though not surprising, to see confirmation of the strong benefits our tomosynthesis technology can bring to users across different clinical environments."

Last month, the company streamlined its operational focus by completing the sale of its Lifecodes business unit to Immucor.
