Sanofi reports positive results from myelofibrosis trial

Sanofi has announced positive top-line results from a pivotal phase III trial of the selective JAK2 inhibitor SAR302503, which is being evaluated as a treatment for myelofibrosis.

Data from the Jakarta study showed that the drug was able to meet its primary endpoint in both dose groups by significantly reducing spleen volumes among patients over a period of 24 weeks.

SAR302503 has moved from phase I to the completion of pivotal phase III studies in less than three years since Sanofi's acquisition of the molecule, with regulatory filings to relevant global authorities planned soon.

It is being assessed for the treatment of the three main types of myeloproliferative neoplasms – primary myelofibrosis, polycythaemia vera and essential thrombocythaemia.

Dr Debasish Roychowdhury, senior vice-president and head of Sanofi Oncology, said: "Patients with myelofibrosis in advanced stages are desperately ill and in need of treatments that will improve their outcomes."

Earlier this month, the company announced the commencement of two phase III trials for sarilumab, a promising new treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
