Boehringer Ingelheim reports positive new Pradaxa safety data

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced new data from RELY-ABLE, a study showcasing the long-term safety performance of its atrial fibrillation (AF) therapy Pradaxa.

Results from the long-term extension of the pivotal RE-LY trial have revealed that the therapy was able to deliver a low risk of bleeding incidents and haemorrhagic stroke among AF patients receiving Pradaxa as a means of preventing stroke.

Patients enrolled in RELY-ABLE continued Pradaxa therapy for an additional 2.3 years after the conclusion of RE-LY in an ongoing blinded comparison, bringing the mean duration of treatment to 4.3 years.

This means Pradaxa is the only novel oral anticoagulant with controlled long-term clinical trial data extending beyond four years of ongoing treatment.

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president for medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "We are pleased that the new long-term data from RELY-ABLE adds to the growing body of positive evidence for Pradaxa in stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation."

This comes after the firm announced data from another study earlier this month showing how its drug faldaprevir can aid the treatment of hepatitis C virus.
