Boston Scientific receives NICE backing for S-ICD System

Boston Scientific has announced that its S-ICD (subcutaneous implantable defibrillator) System has received an endorsement from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Recent guidance from the UK regulator stated that current evidence confirmed the adequacy of S-ICD's performance in preventing sudden cardiac death among ventricular arrhythmias patients in the short and medium term.

This new guidance supports the growing body of evidence suggesting the device could offer benefits if applied to a larger patient pool.

An analysis presented at the recent European Heart Rhythm Association annual meeting showed that S-ICD can deliver reductions in lead-related complications when compared with both single and dual chamber transvenous implantable defibrillator systems.

Dr Andrew Grace, consultant cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, said: "The NICE interventional procedure guidance on the insertion of the S-ICD System is a welcome step in the development of this new therapy."

Earlier this month, Boston Scientific reported positive data from a study showing how its Vercise DBS System can offer benefits for sufferers of Parkinson's disease.
