Teva launches generic version of Viagra in Europe

Teva has announced the launch of its generic version of Viagra (sildenafil) in several European countries, following the expiry of the patent on Pfizer's branded original product.

The new off-label erectile dysfunction therapy is being introduced in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium and Denmark, following on from previous launches in Spain, Canada and other countries.

Viagra restores impaired erectile function by increasing blood flow to the penis and has proven to be hugely successful for Pfizer since it was made available in 1998.

Teva will be distributing the drug via its existing wholesaler and pharmacy channels, with European legislation preventing the company from offering the product directly to consumers.

Dipankar Bhattacharjee, president and chief executive officer of Teva's European generics division, said: "The launch today of sildenafil will bring choice to the pharmacy to help them serve the patient and to help ensure that high-quality healthcare in Europe is affordable."

Actavis has also launched its own generic version of Viagra following the expiry of Pfizer's patent.
