Dental professionals highlight need for ‘cultural change’ in sector

The UK dental sector will need to evolve significantly over the coming years in order to adjust to changing trends in oral health, according to industry representatives.

A seminar on the future of British dentistry recently took place at the Westminster Health Forum that was attended by numerous politicians and prominent industry figures, including British Dental Association and General Dental Council spokespeople, reports Dentistry.

It was noted during the discussions that many details of the government's new dental contract remain somewhat vague, despite pilot schemes having commenced almost two years ago.

With an additional 20 dental practices joining the pilot programme last month, it is becoming important for the pace of reforms to be accelerated, thereby offering greater clarity for professionals.

It was also noted that young people are becoming increasingly selective and willing to leave practices to get the care they desire, making clearer communication with patients essential.

Chief dental officer Barry Cockcroft said: "Workforce change doesn't happen instantly. We need to start training for 20 to 30 years ahead and it will need a big cultural change."
