MSD Animal Health vaccine study shows intradermal benefits

MSD Animal Health has revealed new study data that supports the efficacy of intradermal administration of new mycoplasma vaccines.

At a symposium held prior to the start of the European Symposium of Porcine Health Management in Edinburgh in May, the company presented data from a trial evaluating the local and systemic immune response induced by mycoplasma vaccines in swine.

It was found that intradermal administration appeared to stimulate the immune system at least as efficiently as intramuscular administration – if not better – while also engaging a more efficient stimulation of mucosal and cell-mediated immunity.

Intradermal vaccination is known to be an animal-friendly option that is less painful and stressful for pigs, as well as being more hygienic.

Dr Rika Jolie, director of scientific marketing affairs at MSD Animal Health, said: "This highly contagious chronic respiratory disease in swine can have severe economic impact for farmers. An effective means of vaccination against this disease can help farmers with the management of herd health."

This comes after the manufacturer launched Bovilis SBV – the first vaccine specifically targeting the Schmallenberg virus – in the UK earlier this year.
