Lilly’s Trajenta shows benefits in new diabetes trial

Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim's Trajenta has been shown to offer benefits to elderly diabetes patients in a newly-published study.

Data from a phase III trial has been published in The Lancet showing that elderly people with type 2 diabetes treated with Trajenta for 24 weeks experienced significant reductions in blood glucose levels compared with those receiving placebo.

The overall safety and tolerability profile of the drug was also shown to be similar to placebo, with the results adding to the growing body of evidence supporting the safety and efficacy profile of Trajenta in this population.

Professor Anthony Barnett of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and University of Birmingham said: "Elderly individuals represent approximately 15 percent of people with type 2 diabetes worldwide. This study may help inform treatment decisions for improving glycaemic control in the elderly."

Earlier this month, Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim launched a new Trajenta trial to assess cardiovascular and renal outcomes associated with the diabetes drug.
