Dentists ‘can help to detect early stages of dementia’

21st October 2015

The British Dental Health Foundation has highlighted the importance of recognising the early stages of dementia through oral health examinations.

According to the charity, many people with dementia are often unable to properly maintain their oral health themselves as their health declines, meaning this could be a sign for dentists and doctors of the early stages of the disease.

In the early stages of dementia, patients are encouraged to carry their own oral care for as long as they can, with carers offering reminders or supervision. Carers may be required to take on more responsibility as patients lose the ability to take care of themselves.

The charity believes that by offering people with dementia plans for effective healthcare, it can be ensured that their oral health and overall wellbeing is not put at further risk.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "As dementia is progressive, recognising it early means that an effective care plan can be put into place before it leads to further health problems, including painful and extensive dental health issues."

The Alzheimer's Society estimates there are currently more than 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, and that this will surpass one million by 2025.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801803758-ADNFCR
