New FGM reporting requirements introduced to NHS

4th November 2015

New legal requirements have been introduced compelling doctors and nurses to report female genital mutilation (FGM) to the police.

From October 31st, healthcare professionals must alert the police if they treat a girl under 18 who shows signs of FGM, with a range of resources released by the Department of Health to ensure healthcare staff are equipped and confident to deal with cases that occur.

Developed with the support of the NHS, the Royal Colleges and FGM survivors, the package includes guidance for professionals on what action they should take and a poster publicising the new duty, as well as training slides, video interviews and leaflets for staff.

This comes as part of a broader effort to put healthcare professionals at the forefront of ending the abusive and illegal practice in the UK.

Public health minister Jane Ellison said: "The tools we are providing will empower NHS staff and support them in strengthening their safeguarding response for our girls who are at risk, and better protect and care for those living with FGM."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801804979-ADNFCR
