Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly’s Jardiance recommended in Wales

19th January 2016

Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly have announced that their new type 2 diabetes therapy Jardiance has been recommended for use by the NHS in Wales.

The drug has been endorsed by the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group as an option for the treatment of type 2 diabetes to improve glycaemic control in adults as monotherapy when diet and exercise alone does not work and metformin is deemed inappropriate due to intolerance.

A total of 13,076 patients were included in clinical studies to evaluate the safety of this drug, with results showing that the overall rate of adverse events was comparable to placebo.

Jardiance was developed as part of a diabetes-focused research collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly that commenced in January 2011.

Professor Klaus Dugi, medical director for Boehringer Ingelheim in the UK and Ireland, said: "The recommendation of Jardiance by the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group is good news for patients in Wales. It will provide patients with a further treatment option to help improve glycaemic control."

The companies received European regulatory approval for Jardiance back in 2014.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801810349-ADNFCR
