FGDP(UK) calls for tax on sugary drinks

26th January 2016

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) has become the latest dental industry organisation to give its backing to the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks.

Following a recent campaign by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and the Action on Sugar group, the move has received support from the House of Commons Health Select Committee and is recommended by Public Health England.

UK sugar consumption has increased by 31 per cent since 1990 and now contributes 12 to 15 per cent of Britons' total energy intake, despite Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) guidelines saying this should be no more than five per cent.

Excessive sugar consumption can lead to a number of negative health consequences, including tooth decay – particularly among children – and obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

Dr Mick Horton, dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), said: "Our sugar-related health crises will only get worse if we continue to shy away from bold action. SACN's advice on the need for sugar reduction and Public Health England's recommendations on how to do it are clear."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801811033-ADNFCR
