Medtronic receives NICE recommendation for MiniMed Paradigm Veo system
Medtronic has announced that its MiniMed Paradigm Veo insulin pump system has been recommended for use by NHS patients in England and Wales.
The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued positive guidance endorsing the use of Medtronic's systems for managing type 1 diabetes and for the avoidance of potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic episodes.
MiniMed Paradigm Veo was specifically recommended for patients who experience disabling hypoglycaemia, which are repeated and unpredictable low-blood sugar attacks that can result in persistent anxiety about recurrence.
The MiniMed Paradigm Veo system and its successor, the MiniMed 640G, are the only systems to offer low-glucose suspend modes and continuous glucose monitoring technology.
Users can receive alerts when their sensor glucose levels are falling too low or rising too high, while the device can also mimic the human pancreas' ability to suspend insulin delivery automatically when needed.
Lesley Jordan, chief executive of UK patient advocacy group INPUT, said: "The availability of such advanced technology means those living with type 1 diabetes may experience less difficulty and risk in their day-to-day lives as a result."
