Approval given for BD’s automated cervical cancer screening system
Approval has been given to BD from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its BD Totalys MultiProcessor and BD Totalys SlidePrep instruments.
These innovations, along with the BD FocalPoint SlideProfiler make up the complete BD Totalys system, which further automates slide preparation, imaging and review for use in cervical cancer screening.
Not only this, but the system also provides ancillary testing aliquot capability, or sampling taken for chemical analysis or further testing.
By increasing automation in the laboratory process, this will help to reduce issues with human error and also increases lab workflow efficiency.
The BD Totalys System, when combined with the BD SurePath liquid-based Pap test, offers an improved automated process for cervical cancer screening when compared to other methods currently employed in laboratories.
So far the system has been introduced into the United States, but it is hoped that it will expand to the rest of the world soon.
Doug White, vice-president and general manager for Women's Health & Molecular Diagnostics at BD, said: "The BD Totalys system provides clinical laboratories with a highly customisable, automated and liquid-based cytology solution to help improve laboratory efficiency [and] enhance sample tracking."
