New study shows role of parents in promoting health in young adults

27th June 2016

A new study has shed light on the pivotal role that parents play in developing healthy behaviour and preventing obesity in their children's later lives.

The University of Guelph research has indicated that young adults who grow up in stable families with strong parental relationships are more likely to have healthy diets, keep active and maintain good sleep habits.

High family functioning and quality relationships were associated with lower odds of eating disorders, more frequent physical activity and more sleep, with females in these families also reporting a lower intake of fast food and a reduced chance of being overweight or obese.

Among males, it was shown that the relationship with the father had a greater impact on their odds of being overweight or obese, with the father-son relationship having a stronger influence on sons than the mother-daughter relationship on young women.

Study leader Professor Jess Haines said: "Our results underscore the importance of examining the influence fathers have on their children and to develop strategies to help fathers support the development of healthy behaviours among their children."
