AstraZeneca and PEPFAR to provide HIV and hypertension services in Africa

AstraZeneca has announced a new healthcare support partnership with the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The $10 million (7.56 million pounds) five-year public-private partnership will expand access to HIV/AIDS and hypertension services by offering them in an integrated manner at existing PEPFAR-supported HIV/AIDS sites in Africa, beginning in Kenya.

Work will specifically target men aged 25 to 50, a group that generally accesses HIV/AIDS testing and treatment far less frequently than women. As such, HIV-infected men generally enter care with more advanced disease and are less likely to be treated successfully.

PEPFAR's sizeable patient reach presents AstraZeneca with an opportunity to screen for hypertension during clinical triage, while PEPFAR will leverage its partner's capabilities to make hypertension screening available to men alongside HIV/AIDS services for the first time.

The partnership will formally launch in October 2016 with a one-year pilot programme in western Kenya.
