ResMed study shows benefits of noninvasive ventilation for home COPD treatment
ResMed has announced the results of a new study demonstrating the benefits of noninvasive ventilation for the home-based treatment of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).
Data from the HOT-HMV study have been reported at the 2016 European Respiratory Society International Congress, which analysed COPD patients who had high carbon dioxide levels in their blood and who were hospitalised after their COPD worsened.
It was shown that the addition of noninvasive ventilation and oxygen therapy at home decreased these patients' risk of rehospitalisation or death by 51 percent, while also lowering the chances of death due to an acute worsening of the disease.
Patients treated with noninvasive ventilation and oxygen at home went a median of 4.3 months without a hospital admission or death, compared to 1.4 months for those treated with oxygen only.
Glenn Richards, chief medical officer at ResMed, said: "These study results add further weight to the existing evidence supporting the broader use of noninvasive ventilation for patients living with COPD."
