Eisai receives EU approval for cancer drug Kisplyx

Eisai has announced that its anticancer agent Kisplyx has been approved by the European Commission for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma.

The lenvatinib-based treatment is indicated for use in combination with everolimus for the treatment of adult patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma following one prior vascular endothelial growth factor-targeted therapy.

This approval was based on positive data from a phase II trial, Study 205, which showed that Kisplyx was associated with a significant extension in progression-free and overall survival compared to everolimus alone.

Europe now becomes the second region where this drug has been licensed for the advanced renal cell carcinoma indication, following approval in the US.

The company said: "Eisai remains committed to providing further clinical evidence for lenvatinib aimed at maximising value of the drug as it seeks to contribute further to addressing the diverse needs of, and increasing the benefits provided to, patients with cancer."

This comes after the firm received approval for the drug Treakisym to be used in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in its native Japan.
