Philips study shows benefits of home ventilation for COPD

25th May 2017

Philips has announced the results of a new clinical trial that highlights a potentially beneficial new approach to treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The Philips-sponsored study involved 116 patients in the UK and was carried out by respiratory experts at St Thomas' Hospital in London. It suggested that a combination of non-invasive ventilation and home oxygen therapy can deliver improvements for this patient group.

The addition of home ventilation to oxygen therapy was shown to significantly prolong the time to readmission or death for patients with COPD following a life-threatening respiratory event or exacerbation, as well as enhancing patient health-related quality of life in the first six weeks.

It shows that this approach can reduce hospital admissions and help people to lead healthier, more active lives at home, potentially changing the way people requiring long-term treatment for COPD are managed.

Dr Teofilo Lee-Chiong, chief medical liaison at Philips, said: "This study shows that home noninvasive ventilation is a potent, therapeutic tool that clinicians can use to help keep patients with advanced COPD out of the hospital."
