London hospitals ‘struggling with poor air quality’

A majority of London's hospitals are being exposed to illegal and potentially harmful levels of air pollution, according to a new report.

The study from the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and King's College London indicated that air quality conditions at 577 of 800 inner London hospitals, clinics and GP surgeries breached EU emission standards on nitrogen dioxide.

In outer London, 408 out of 990 sites were also found to be breaching legal safety limits, meaning more than half of London's hospitals may be putting the health of their patients and staff at risk.

The study also found that all of London's NHS facilities are located in areas that breached World Health Organization guidelines on pollution levels, prompting the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change to accuse the government of not taking this issue seriously enough.

Nick Hopkinson, a London-based consultant in respiratory medicine, said: "This is the time for health professionals to be making a noise; talk to their MPs and encourage patients, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to do the same."
