NHS ‘requires overseas recruitment to address workforce concerns’
The NHS is facing workforce concerns that can only be addressed with renewed investment in overseas recruitment, according to a new report.
Produced by NHS Providers, the paper has warned that any significant reduction in the number of international staff in the next few years is likely to have a "serious and damaging" impact on care quality.
A survey of NHS mental health, community, ambulance and hospital trusts conducted as part of the report showed that 66 percent of organisations see workforce concerns as the most pressing challenge in delivering high-quality care.
Meanwhile, 85 percent said it will remain important to recruit from outside the UK in the next three years, with Brexit seen as the main barrier to this happening. Additionally, 90 percent said they were doubtful that current government efforts will help them recruit and retain the staff they need.
Chris Hopson, chief executive officer of NHS Providers, said: "A better future for the NHS workforce is within our grasp, but we need a commitment from government and national bodies, first to recognise the gravity and urgency of the challenges we face, and then to act."
