Record rise in childhood tooth decay
A growing number of cases of children requiring surgical extractions has been highlighted in the latest NHS figures.
As a result, The Guardian has argued the UK is now facing an epidemic of childhood tooth decay, with record numbers of young people requiring surgery as a result of poor dental hygiene.
The NHS data revealed that in 2016-17, a total of 42,911 individual cases were seen where a child required multiple extractions due to the poor state of their teeth – the equivalent of 170 per day.
Responding, Izzi Seccombe, councillor and chair of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, stated: "These figures show that we have an oral health crisis and highlight the damage that excessive sugar intake is doing to young people's health."
