DEFRA Expand Bluetongue Restrictions Across More English Counties
The bluetongue virus is spreading swiftly across England, prompting authorities to expand restrictions to include Nottinghamshire, and parts of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. This expansion follows the confirmation of new cases along the Lincolnshire border, highlighting the urgent need to control the outbreak which affects livestock health and movement across the country.
Since late August, the BTV-3 bluetongue outbreak has resulted in over 120 affected premises across England and Wales. Various counties, including Nottinghamshire and specific areas of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, have joined an extensive restricted zone aimed at controlling the virus’s spread.
The zone now spans significant portions of the southeast and east of England, impacting a large section of the livestock industry. DEFRA and APHA are working to contain the virus, with strict measures that include culling affected animals. Cases outside these zones are also on the rise, with recent detections in Cornwall and North Yorkshire linked to movements from Suffolk before restrictions were imposed.
The expansion of the restricted zone serves as a critical response to the growing bluetongue threat. While challenging for farmers, these restrictions aim to curb further spread and ensure livestock health. Ongoing vigilance and testing are essential as officials navigate the outbreak’s complexities, underscoring the importance of containment in safeguarding the industry.
