AHDB Data Shows UK Young Cattle Numbers Start to Rise

Katie Ginger
The latest British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) data, published by AHDB on 25 June 2026, shows the number of cattle under 12 months old on GB farms is starting to grow, even as the total herd continues to contract. Reflecting April 2026 figures, the data points to a meaningful structural shift in UK beef production, with implications for the future supply pipeline running into 2027 and beyond.
The total GB cattle herd stood at 7.48 million head at 1 April 2026, down 0.8% (60,500 head) year-on-year. Within that, the female breeding herd over 30 months consisted of 1.4 million dairy cattle (down 2.0% YoY) and 1.2 million beef cattle (down 2.1% YoY). The historical gap between faster beef contraction and slower dairy decline has narrowed, with strong milk prices through 2024 to mid-2025 having encouraged dairy farmers to retain cows for longer, before increased culling resumed as milk prices softened in summer 2025.
Calf registration data shows a clear shift toward dairy-beef production. Dairy-beef male calf births rose 2.1% in Q1 2026 year-on-year, while dairy male registrations fell 2.7%, reflecting wider adoption of sexed semen across the dairy herd alongside the entry of beef sexed male semen to the market. Suckler beef calf registrations also rose, with male calves up 3.0% and female calves up 2.2%, marking the first signs of recovery in a long-contracting suckler herd. Record beef prices through 2024 to 2025 have driven the retention of breeding stock.
The lift in younger cattle numbers points to a slower contraction of prime beef production over the next 12 to 18 months as those animals move toward slaughter. The variable to watch is producer confidence: with beef prices having softened over the past six months, the incentive structure that drove the rebuild may weaken before the next breeding cycle. The next BCMS update will be telling.
