Pfizer introduces new UK distribution system
Pfizer UK has launched a new distribution system following concerns about the prevalence of fake batches of Lipitor.
Lipitor fakes have been discovered in the UK in at least two instances during the last two year. In response, Pfizer has taken new steps to restore confidence in the distribution system and ensure that genuine medicines are reaching healthcare professionals and patients.
The company has partnered with UniChem, which will provide logistical services as Pfizer takes “full responsibility” for delivering the drug from manufacturing facility to pharmacies, hospitals and doctors, with no intermediary parties.
The move could also have additional benefits, such as increased responsiveness from the manufacturer to stock shortages and improved visibility in the supply chain, Pfizer claims.
Dr Olivier Brandicourt, managing director of Pfizer UK, described the new system as “good news” for pharmacists and patients.
“We are deeply concerned with the current distribution system and increased incidence of counterfeit medicines in the UK supply chain,” he added.
Pfizer states that it will be working closely with pharmacy customers to explain how the new system will work. It hopes that it will be able to distribute medicines directly to customers by March 2007.
The company employs approximately 6,900 people in the UK and is the NHS’ biggest supplier of drugs.
Pfizer’s UK operating headquarters in Walton Oaks, Surrey, opened in 2002. Additionally, four of the top-ten selling drugs in the world were discovered at Pfizer’s research facility in Sandwich, Kent.
