New protocol for contagious equine metritis

Government Veterinary authorities and the equine industry have joined forces to put a protocol in place to control future outbreaks of contagious equine metritis (CEM).

CEM is a veneral disease which can cause sub-fertility in affected mares and can cause chronic infections in stallions.

What to do if you suspect CEM
Owners of horses affected by CEM in England, Scotland and Wales may use private equine vets who have been approved to deal with the disease, but all suspected cases must still be reported to the APHA.
Control measures will need to be taken as outlined in the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) code of practice.

These developments have been developed by the Equine Disease Coalition in collaboration with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the BEVA.
