Oral health tops clear skin for confidence boost

13th June 2018

A Delta Dental study conducted on adult Americans in 2017 found that 53% associated their smile with their overall success and 70% believed that a smile can make or break a first impression. Those who visit the dentist at least once a year (76%) are more likely to say they like their smile.
Of those surveyed by The Adult’s Oral Health & Well-Being Survey, 67% said that good oral health makes people feel confident, 60% cited clear skin for confidence, and 57% thought being in good physical shape was what makes the majority of Americans feel confident.
Adults surveyed who were dedicated to good oral health were more likely to described their relationships, careers and finances as excellent (26%, 21% and 15% respectively), versus those not so dedicated to good oral health (16%, 10% and 8% respectively), indicating that confidence can affect relationships, career and earning potential.
Joe Dill, DDS, MBA, Delta Dental Plans Association’s vice president of dental science said: “In the national survey from Delta Dental, there appears to be a correlation between adults’ dedication to their proper oral care and a belief that their overall well-being has improved. How often a person smiles also seems to make a difference. Adults surveyed shared that they feel those who smile frequently are often more successful than those who smile less.”
