Huge step forward in the creation of more effective Influenza vaccines

Scientists have been able to understand a vital area of a pigs immune system that could lead to the creation of more powerful and effective influenza vaccines.
Researchers at The Pirbright Institute, University of Bristol, Cardiff University and University of Oxford can show how CD8 (killer) T Cells recruit in large numbers within the lungs and can identify virus proteins recognised by the immune system, which can contribute to designing more effective vaccines in the future.
Elma Tchilian, Head of immunology group at Pirbright commented on the findings, “We can now measure cellular immune response in pig to vaccines and infections. Developing a vaccine strategy that will protect humans, pigs and birds would be a huge step forward in fighting disease and infection control.
