NHS England and UK Space Agency work together on hi-tech healthcare solutions.
There are already examples of how technology originally designed for space has been turned into hi-tech medical solutions to improve NHS care, such as breast screening vans with the ability to send images back to assessment centres, skin cancer prevention apps, and a monitor for the elderly to wear to help prevent falls, amongst others. Now, the UK Space Agency will fund up to £4 million to work with NHS England to find new hi-tech solutions for the current challenges the NHS faces, such as the management of long-term conditions, the need for earlier diagnoses of cancer, better mental health care, and a better offering of solutions at primary care level.
Emily Gravestock, UK Space Agency head of applications said: “Britain’s world-leading space sector continues to grow and support vital public services like the NHS with innovative applications. We encourage all businesses and public bodies to consider the role that satellite data can play in tackling some of the biggest challenges we face, as part of the government’s Industrial Strategy.”
