Boehringer Ingelheim wants UK Vets to highlight signs of laminitis
Laminitis is a painful and potentially crippling disease that can cause death in horses. Research shows that most horse owners do not recognise the signs of laminitis in their horses, and it only comes to light once diagnosed by a vet. Boehringer Ingelheim has an initiative called Talk About Laminitis which is supported by Redwings Horse Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, and the British Horse Society, which has been running for the last 7 years. There is a self-assessment checklist on the Talk About Laminitis website, available for vets to educate their clients, and for horse owners to obtain independently, which explains the signs of this disease and encourages referral to a vet.
BHS Welfare education manager, Emmeline Hannelly, said: “The statistics from these research studies are very concerning. However, by working together and helping to educate horse owners, the awareness of laminitis and pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction will hopefully improve with these great resources.”
