Women with Diabetes have increase chances of developing oral cancer

Research carried out by the Oral Health Foundation found that women who suffer with diabetes have a 13% higher change of developing oral cancer.
It was also discovered that there is a 27% chance for diabetic women to develop any form of cancer compared to 19% for men.
Dr Nigel Carter of the Oral Health Foundation said “this new research shows a specific link to mouth cancer making regular dental visits an absolute must. Everyone should be aware of what the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer are, not just those that suffer with diabetes.”
Studies have also found a strong link between patients with sever gum disease and those with type 2 diabetes. The British Medical Journal feel that screening dental patients would be a ‘worthwhile’ exercise.
The British Dental Associations scientific advisor Professor Damien Walmsley said “Preventing gum disease is important for all patients and dentists regardless of the risk of diabetes. Whilst there is currently no protocol for dentists to screen patients with severe gum disease for type 2 diabetes, this could a role for the future, but it would require funding to be in place for the training and delivery of the service.“
