Biggest ever MS trial launches in the UK

30 UK sites in the England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland are participating in the biggest ever trial for secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS).
After a smaller trial revealed that the cholesterol buster simvastatin, was able to boost levels of disability and slow down the diseases progression, this secondary trial is researching to see if the drug will be the first to slow down or stop the progression of disability for SPMS.
“People who suffer with SPMS have been waiting for decades for a drug that works for this condition,” said Dr Jeremy Chataway, leader of the trial. “Simvastatin is showing to be one of the most promising treatments within our lifetime, hence the level of excitement surrounding the trial launch.”
The trial is being funded by the MS Society in collaboration with the National Institute for Health Research, the National MS Society (US), the NHS and UK universities.
