3D printing technique to make bone implants is created
A 3D advanced printing technique developed by researchers in Germany believe that more precise bone implants could be created that will be more stable than those using conventional methods.
The secret, according to the researchers from Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering, lies in the printing process, with individual layers being treated with cold plasma to improve the bonding of bone-forming cells. The conventional technique uses low pressure having a limited penetration to the interior of the implants.
“To replace the implant that has been broken down gradually over time, our goal is for the bone cells to grown as quickly as possible.” Said Dr. Jochen Borris, who heads up the Life Science and Ecology business unit at Fraunhofer IST.
The team are now trying to simplify the process and are looking for a partner to help bring the technique to market, and simplifying the process.
