Confirmed cases of EI in Europe
The British Equine Veterinary Association is warning that in the last few weeks there have been confirmed cases of equine influenza in France, Germany and the UK, and they advise that vaccinated horses need to be checked over, and equine vets need to be on high alert for potential EI cases, especially in Essex and Cheshire where recent diagnoses of EI have been confirmed, and among animals that may have travelled and mixed with other horses. These cases were diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction on a nasopharyngeal swab sent to the Animal Health Trust.
BEVA said: “If you are suspicious, please do take advantage of the generous support of the Horserace Betting Levy Board to cover laboratory testing costs for equine influenza as part of the AHT’s equine influenza surveillance initiative. EI viruses and data arising from this field surveillance greatly informs ongoing monitoring of the evolution of the virus and assessment of the appropriateness of vaccines to continue to protect horse populations.”
