Galderma offers new insights into hidden impact of Rosacea disease

10th April 2019

Rosacea is a relapsing condition that affects around 415 million people across the globe. Due to the individuality of the disease and periodic flare-ups, it is a difficult disease to treat. The 2018 Rosacea: Beyond the visible report highlighted the emotional, psychological and societal impact of rosacea. About 82% of people surveyed felt their rosacea is not fully controlled, and 55% of those in employment said that it impacted their work productivity. 86% admitted to changing their behaviour to avoid triggered flare ups to such an extent that it put a strain on their everyday lives.
Now Galderma has gone a step further with an online community of 130 rosacea patients and they have discovered that many adopt a short-term approach to treatment, do not return to their healthcare professional when symptoms flare up due to bad experiences with prescribed medications or their dermatologist, and instead choose to self-treat with OTC skincare products. Galderma is launching #RosaceaNoFilter during April, Rosacea Awareness Month, to encourage patients to share their personal experiences of living with the skin disease, in the form of selfies, and to speak up about how it impacts their lives.
Head of Global Medical Affairs Rx SIG, Galderma Nestlé Skin Health, Kamel Chaouche, said: “As a leader in rosacea, Galderma is committed to gathering patient insights that enable us to tailor our approach to better support patient needs and help improve clinical outcomes in this often under-prioritized disease area. Rosacea Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to build on the momentum of our Rosacea: Beyond the Visible campaign and encourage even more patients to find their voice and share their experiences.”
Research director and principal investigator at the Del Rosso Dermatology Research Centre, Dr James Del Rosso, said: “Patients are increasingly turning to alternative treatments due to their lack of faith in treatments prescribed by clinicians. In order to support patients and encourage them to seek guidance and appropriate treatment from their dermatologist, it is important that we as professionals first understand the burden they are experiencing with this life-altering skin condition and adapt our approach.”
