Cigarette consumptions drops by 1.4 billion in England
A study conducted by Cancer Research UK has shown a 1.4 billion drop in cigarette consumption in England.
Results from the study revealed that between 2011 and 2018, the average monthly cigarette consumption dropped by 188 million, suggesting that the stricter tobacco laws are encouraging people to quit.
Studies like this help to give an accurate picture of cigarette consumption” commented Dr Sarah Jackson, lead author from UCL’s Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group. “It’s brilliant to see that over a billion fewer cigarettes are sold and smoked in England each year, and shows that not only are fewer people taking up the habit, but those that do smoke are also continuing to smoke less.”
“Smoking is still the biggest preventable cause of cancer, so it’s great news that fewer cigarettes are being sold and smoked. Said George Butterworth, senior policy manager at Cancer Research UK. “The results are proof that smoking trends are heading in the right direction, and that introducing the stricter regulations has helped.”
