Roche edging towards the takeover approval of Spark Therapeutics.
FTC will hopefully give its approval to Roche’s takeover of Spark Therapeutics soon. The expected deal date for Roche to obtain Spark back in February has been continuously moved back. This is due to the FTC and CMA taking their time to examine the antitrust issues raised by the deal.
Financial regulators could be concerned and apprehensive of Roche and Spark’s possible leading position in the haemophilia space, and shareholders of both companies are concerned that the deal might not happen. Despite the doubt, Roche believes the deal will be sorted by the end of the year. However, regulators have been inspecting the deal as Roche’s antibody drug, Hemlibra, has been growing at a fast pace and is set to become phenomenal with high sales.
A deadline has been put in place from the CMA, for mid-December, for a judgement on the first phase of the acquisition. If they believe they don’t need to investigate further, the process will end. However, if they decide to carry on the probe with a second phase, the end of 2019 finishing point will be highly unlikely.
