LVS removes a significantly large tumour from a collie cross

Following on from the constant pain in her anus and vagina, particularly when going to the toilet, a fifteen year old collie cross called Rosie was admitted into London Vet Specialists (LVS), and not long after her arrival, a computerised tomography (CT) examine was conducted to identify the issue. The outcome from the scan revealed that Rosie had a significantly large tumour developing from inside her vagina called a leiomyoma, and in this way a complex procedure was led by the Head of Surgery at LVS, Janet Kovak McClaran, for the expulsion of the tumour, observed by David Neilson – a LVS specialist anaesthetist – who likewise monitored Rosie’s recuperation.

A specialist in diagnostic imaging at LVS and CT scan led, Ian Jones, stated: “The cause of Rosie’s pain and discomfort was a huge mass growing from her vagina, which was compressing her urethra and colon. The detailed images from the scan were extremely important to us in identifying the true size of the problem, determining the best treatment and then pre planning the scope and nature of the necessary surgery. This was very helpful as it was a particularly delicate operation to perform. There is limited access to the perineal region and because vaginal tissue can bleed profusely, there was a possibility she could require a blood transfusion.”

Dr Kovak McClaran, stated: “The area between the perineum and vagina, where the tumour was located, is a difficult place to examine and a very challenging place to operate. So I accessed the large vaginal mass via an incision underneath Rosie’s tail and successfully removed the tumour this way. The biopsy revealed this was a very slow growing tumour called a leiomyoma which is unlikely to cause Rosie any problems in the future. This is very good news for Rosie and her owners, who say she has recovered well and is now happy, full of energy and has a spring in her step once again.”
