NHS statistics show an increased risk of diabetes
Recent NHS statistics have revealed that 1,969,610 people in England are suffering from the ever-growing non-diabetic hyperglycaemia condition, which puts people at jeopardy of developing type 2 diabetes.
Due to the high NHS costs in controlling complications of the disease, a Diabetes Prevention Plan has been incorporated for sufferers. So far, participants have collectively lost an estimated one hundred and eighty-five thousand and fifty-one kilogrammes in weight. Furthermore, eighty-nine thousand, six hundred and four people have completed the programme.
As the number of people with diabetes continues to rise, predictions reveal that by 2035 over fifty-thousand people will have had a stroke, and an estimated thirty-nine thousand people will have had a heart attack.
Sir Simon Stevens, NHS Chief Executive, stated: “The NHS’s highly successful, world-leading diabetes prevention programme is helping hundreds of thousands of people take small common-sense steps to get control of their own health. But unless many more of us make a change, obesity related illnesses will end up costing hundreds of thousands more lives and billions of pounds in higher treatment costs.”
