Thermo Scientific blood test can identify sensitisation to proteins in insect venom that can be fatal

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology has identified that there are around 100 deaths annually due to insect sting anaphylaxis, and now the FDA has approved Thermo Scientific’s ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Stinging Insect Allergen Components for in vitro diagnostic use to analyse a patient’s sensitivity to a variety of eight proteins found in wasp and bee venom, and to help distinguish between actual sensitisation and cross reactivity. The test should also be able to pinpoint which insects might affect those with inconclusive patient history, and such analysis will serve to support future therapy plans.

Dr. Lakiea Wright, medical director of U.S. clinical affairs at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: “People who have experienced an allergic reaction to an insect sting have a 60 percent chance of a similar or worse reaction if stung again. Anaphylaxis can occur within minutes. Testing a patient’s sensitization to venom proteins may play a critical role in helping clinicians devise plans for future therapy.”

Jay Portnoy, director of the division of allergy, asthma and immunology at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, said: “Coupling ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Stinging Insect Components with whole allergen testing and a comprehensive clinical history allows clinicians to better analyze patients’ sensitivity to bee and wasp venom. Determining which insect and if there is any cross reactivity among the different allergens can help healthcare providers be more precise in their diagnosis and management recommendations.”
