Plans to develop the first waste plastic to hydrogen facility in the UK has been pushed a step closer to execution with the completion of a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, which is being built by Peel L&P Environmental.

The facility, expected to be built at Protos park, will use PowerHouse Energy Group’s pioneering distributed modular generation technology, developed at Thornton Science Park. The technology will be used to generate hydrogen from plastic waste which could be used to fuel buses and cars.

The FEED study assessed all the engineering and design aspects of the planned facility during the lockdown and evaluated the overall cost of the project, estimated at twenty-million pounds.

The state-of-the-art facility will transform how plastic is dealt with within the UK, with the project also set to provide a blueprint for future projects to be carried out in the UK. Within the coming years, Peel L&P Environmental will create eleven facilities across the United Kingdom and has the choice of exclusive rights to the UK’s Powerhouse Energy technology leading to over seventy buildings in total.
