German startup storms the global eyewear market

16th December 2021

You Mawo, a German startup, is operating at maximum levels to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding market.

The 3D printed frames made by You Mawo are proving increasingly popular. Apart from the frames that are customized, this production process is significantly more environmentally friendly. The reduction in the volume of waste produced means that the carbon footprint is reduced by almost 60%. “A standard pair of spectacles, which is usually made in Southeast Asia, has a large CO2 footprint because of the shipping involved.”

A higher 3D printing capacity was required to accommodate the ever-increasing demand. Siemens Financial Services provided a lease arrangement to cover the cost of the extra EOS machinery. Additive Scale (the collaboration between You Mawo and AM GLOBAL) enables increased and efficient production as a result of its funding strategy. Risk has also decreased since You Mawo did not have to spend on expensive machinery.

The owners of You Mawo intend to take a significant share of the €140 billion worldwide eyewear industry, which sells 9 billion glasses frames annually.

Founder, Daniel Szabo, said that “Once a market is large enough, we envision having small satellite factories so that we can fulfill customer orders quickly.”

“Frames in ten minutes would be nice.”
