New Lung Cancer Test Aims to Aid in Early Identification of the Disease

Following her time at the University of Manchester, Dr. Na Yu Chia founded ErleaDx, her own MedTech company. She has been conducting research to create a blood-based test- the ‘Mirlung Dx lung cancer detector’ which, in theory, should detect lung cancer even if it is in its initial phases. This has piqued the interest of scientists all over the world.

Dr. Chia is now focusing on the lung cancer detector’s new product management and clinical recruiting, with the goal of having the first model accessible by 2023 to those with lung cancer in the UK.

Out of all the people with lung cancer in the UK, over 75% are not having their diagnosis until they are in stage 3 or 4, with the problem being amplified by the impact of Covid 19. The impact of the pandemic is expected to cause 1,300 additional deaths for up to five years following diagnosis.

The objective of ErleaDx is to create a portable gadget that identifies lung cancer like glucose testing metres do for individuals suffering from diabetes.

Dr Chia’s new product potential has received the UK Wellcome Trust Grant, established to fund research to improve human and animal health, as well as $100,000 from the Singapore administration to get their product to market.

“This test is a game changer for the millions of people around the world who hear the devastating words ‘you may have lung cancer’ every year. The current test for lung cancer is expensive, not 100% accurate and involves invasive procedures. Our vision at ErleaDx is to make picking up lung cancer, in its early stages, as easy as a finger prick test at home.”
