New Pay Package for Boots Pharmacists

22nd December 2021

Because of the mounting ambiguity surrounding Omicron and uncertainty regarding the quantity of pharmacists necessary to provide booster vaccines, the PDAU (pharmacists defense association union) has agreed to Boots’ offer.

The proposal comprises of a 2% raise, as well as an extra bonus- 0.76% of their pay packet.

These financial improvements will benefit those in the initial stages of their career and those who reside at the bottom end of the pay bracket, with higher financial rewards for taking shifts with little notice. In total, the package provides enhanced pay of almost 4%.

The parts of the deal that sit above 2% raise on basic annual pay will only cover people under the PDA Union’s area of bargaining. This means that large scale managers, area managers, and pharmacists in alternative roles are excluded from the package.

Less than 25% of PDA Union members at Boots responded to a vote regarding industrial action. “Under UK law, we can only legally embark on industrial action, including action short of strike, if at least 50% of eligible members vote, and at least 40% of eligible members vote for action.”

The PDA Union mentioned the threat of industrial action in October of this year when research done with members of the Union from Boots concluded that over 80% had rejected a 2% pay offer.

Director of the PDA Union, Paul Day, said that “Having exhausted the talks, the option for pharmacists was either take industrial action or accept the company’s final offer and commitment, following the [Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service] hosted conciliation.”

In a statement, Boots UK said: “We value the contribution our pharmacists make to patients, communities, and our business. We fully acknowledge the strength of feeling among many of our pharmacists regarding the purchasing power of their salaries over recent years.

“We therefore commit to ensuring that price inflation is taken into account in the 2022 pay settlement with the PDAU.”
